The question was raised recently regarding practicing on the course for a Stags Medal or Stableford on a Monday when intending to play in the competition on the Tuesday.
Rule 5.2b (Practicing on Course Before or Between Rounds) for Stroke Play covers this
Stroke Play
- A player must not practise on the course before a round, except that the player may:
- Practise putting or chipping on or near their first teeing area.
- Practise on any practice area.
- Practise on or near the putting green of the hole just completed even if they will play that hole again on the same day (see Rule 5.5b).
- A player may practise on the course after completing play of their final round for that day.
which might be interpreted as not being allowed to play on Monday if playing in competition on a Tuesday
However the R&A have covered this scenario with rule 5.2b/2 which deals with competitions over consecutive days.
When a competition is scheduled on a course over consecutive days and the Committee schedules some players to play on the first day and others to play on a later day, a player is allowed to practise on the course on any day that they are not scheduled to play their round. For example, if a competition is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday and a player is only scheduled to play on Sunday, that player is allowed to practise on the course on Saturday.
So it is allowed to practice on a Monday if playing the competition on Tuesday
