" On what will always be called "Buffoons Day" in the future, the Stoneleigh Stags had their own experience of a charlatan winning.
It was the Stags Summer away Day at Hinckley which after the overnight rain looked in magnificent order, verdant, lush, challenging and that was only the attire of the Stags. Of course we did have a few problems , with one Stag failing to find the course and another giving up before the start, but we are old!
47 Seniors played in this years competition, some expectant of a phone call from the Buffoon to become a Minister, so not at all concentrating on the golf. Many golf shots were sliced i.e. going very right, which was very appropriate given the events of the day. A few were worried that a man they wouldn't trust with their shopping was about to lead the country. But as usual most wanted to enjoy the golf.
And, as usual, the golf scores reflected the difficulty of the course, the age of the contestants and the tension of the event with an average score of just 26 stableford points.
Indeed only one person scored more than 36 points. He regales under the title of Bandit Bill, a name recognised in all the golf clubs around Stoneleigh, a man whose handicap has been questioned by every one who plays with him, but who miraculously maintains a handicap some several shots higher than most think it should be.
Mick Lloyd won the nearest the pin and Martin Darbey won the longest drive and interestingly they were the only names on the list.
The competition for second third and fourth pries had to be decided on count back so Julian Westwood lost out after a poorer back nine.
Third place was won by Mike Gilbey , second by Robin Cathcart and the winner was the aforesaid Bill Griffin.
Well done to all of them.
£235 was raised for the Captains Charity , the winners were Nev Burton and Paul Steward (What, the captain!!! winning the raffle again.
